Extreme Kicks Attack

I have seen many good fighters with speed but lose the match due to lacks of skill. Skill, strategy and technique are vital to impress the judges as they are humans. The judges is one thing but I will not going to talk on how to tackle the judges in this posting. Maybe next time I will post just a topic about the referee.

Anyway for this posting, I like to share the importance of aligning and combining a good strategy and skill to win against your opponent. First of all, if you are only good at certain technique, then you are certainly going to lose to opponent who has multiple techniques. For example, you are playing defensive and using a pull back counter attack. One or twice you may counter if the opponent keep on attacking using turning or double kicks. The chance of meeting highly skill opponent is unavoidable as advancing to final. The opponent can read your counter attack easily and starts changing the attacking techniques such as using 360 which is cannot be countered with even speedy pull back kick.

Chopping kick is another effective attacking technique to be used against a good opponent with limited counter attack skill. This deadly chopping kick is very effective to be used against opponent who is very good with their hands blocking your attack against their body. However, this type of fighter always left their top or head unguarded which is very vulnerable to chopping or tracing kicks technique. Another unexpected attack which hard to counter is check-backthrust. However, the opponent must be really good with speed to use this sort of technique. This attack is normally launch from a long distance as to pick up the momentum.

Next posting I will share on how to counter attack of the above extreme kicks attack.

Who is the opponent?

It is you. You may think that you lose because you havent met the opponent before and maybe you have not face the strategy that the opponent use. If you look closely, the body have no issue to face any challengers. This is because it has its own survival instinct which is located at the brain stem of the cerebellum. My previous post, I mention about the type of fighter whereby the hybrid type is the best.

Anyway, if you falls under that type, you are unstoppable and the only thing that stops you from winning is yourself. It is yourself confidence and believing in yourself. It is about trusting yourself by letting your body, mind and soul align to your rythm. It is very powerful when you believe in yourself when the body, mind and soul are align. Every moves just work out smoothly without any hiccup or hesitation. Never hesitate on your moves and if you still has some hesitation, that means that your body, mind and soul are not yet align.

Many fighter starts to lose their confidence once they know or heard that the opponent that they are facing is a national, inter-club, olympic, world champion, etc. This is just your mind playing tricks on you and you already lose the game even before it has started. To convince yourself, you need a little bit of visualisation about the game that you will play before it starts. This is just to tame your wild mind and start to program it accordingly. Once you enter the ring, let it be, let it flow and remember to relax. If you are left behind by several points, go for the head and dont think how you will go about to do that. Don't worry about what techniques to use, just focus that you will score head point. Just tell your mind what you want and let your body work by itself. Ofcourse you need to know all those techniques (backswing, backthrust, 360, etc.) as what you have learnt during your training.

It will all come back to you when you are relax and gets into your rythm and fight back. I normally do my rythmic jog to get back my rythm..

Mind vs. Feel, Which type of fighter you are?

Hello readers,

Thank you for all the emails and comments that I received. Yes, I will keep on posting as long as there are readers out there who are willing to spend their time at this blog.

Anyway, I found this topic interesting to me since I have seen many coaches and masters have different opinion on this subject. For me, there are three types of fighter in the ring.

First, who is always use the mind power in which the fighter will plan every moves in his head prior to engagement. Normally, this type less jog because the mind is busy thinking what to do next. This type of fighter require luck to be on his side since he or she needs the opponent to play the game according to his or her rules. Chances that the opponent might not fall for the bait is high and most probably things might not goes as planned. This technique can be used if you are facing a non experience opponent who can easily falls into your trap setup by your mind. This is when the fighter is set to control the game to win or otherwise.

Second Type is a natural born fighter who has its own reflect and react to every moves naturally. Many best TKD fighters out there have this ability where they do not plan their moves while sparring. This type of fighters jog alot and just move into the rythm and flow according to the situation. Many good fighters do not even know that their legs just move by itselfs performing the kicks. It is like the DNA code of the body is already embedded with the martial arts programs and kicks in anytime. Most of them would have speed and agility which is way more superior than the fisrt type. However, this type of fighter will esily get into the trap of the first type and most of the time will follow the opponent rythm. This is because the fighter did not set the scene of the fight and only moves or react according to instinct.

The Third Type is the best fighter where it combines both the first and second types. The game will be robust and unpredictable. The opponent will have hard time when facing this kind of fighter. For first type (Mind) of fighter, the game plan just wont work since the fighter knows the stage is a setup. This 3rd type of fighter will have its own rythm and mostly stay kewl in the center of the ring with just a little bit of jog but normally react with a massive blow such as backswing. And for the second type of fighter (feel), they will be outsmart and falls into the trap of the mind and speed when they meet this hybrid fighter. So, there you have it. To be the best you need to have both criterias but fighters are normally was born with either one of these types. So, identify yourself and start to learn the other side of you. Such a fighter with this ability is Bruce Lee.

Get into the RytHm

Guys, be kewl, control your emotion and do the dance of life. Now, I like to talk about jog/hop when you are in the ring with an opponent.

First of all, never jog/hop at one place making you static, predictable and become an easy target. Good technique is to move your body/feet front and back or in and out. When you hop backward, it gives the momentum to launch an attack on the next move you hop/jog forward. Never ever chase the opponent as this will make you lose your rythm and making your reflect slow for a counter attack.

So, hop/jog until you can feel your body move as one and reflect by itself. Practice until you can feel the dance and get into trance as this will invoke your brain stem. Once this reptile brain is activated, just let it go with the flow and everything will move, react by itself in survival mode.

Controlling your opponent

Another good technique to use in Taekwondo tournaments is to control the opponent. Most fighters who are of little experience will mirror your stances and moves. For example if you switch your stance to left foot back, they may copy, or if you slide back they will slide forward, if you slide forward they will slide backward. This is a great technique as you can lure your opponent into certain distances to allow you to score. Example:
When sparring and you notice your opponent is copying your stances/movement, slide back and then quickly forward again, your opponent will slide toward you as you slide toward them, use the side kick to catch them out and score.

Another technique is to sidekick your opponent everytime they attempt to attack you, knock them off balance and set up the opportunity to double up your counter attack, for example after the first side kick, fire machine gun style sidekicks to score numerous time.

Also always be aware of your distance, you dont want to be caught with an easy hit just because you misjudged how long the opponents legs were.
Always be aware of the ring, dont get pushed toward the edge of the ring because this would give you disadvantage. Try and keep your opponent under pressure and train your reflexes so that you can dominate, remember that fitness is essential because you will become exhausted in the ring and that is when you are most likely to get caught.

Warming Up before you Spar

Different people require different psychological state before they hit the ring. Some people need to feel the pressure in order for them to get motivated and in high spirit. Some need to get calm and in relax state or they can not perform well. So, it is really a unique situation for everyone to know themself and what they are capable of.

Another important factor is to have a good guide to go with you in the ring. This is crucial since the guide will be your big brother and watching the game closely. He will analyse the game and the strategy used by the opponent. It is important to listen to your guide instruction even if you feel that it is not appropriate to execute certain moved. You need to trust the guide and the guide also need to know your capability before telling them what to do.

The Deadliest Weapon

Backthrust or back kick is the most destructive since the movement of the stance make the opponent open to this kind of attack. Let say both are in the close stance,
which make both fighters roundhouse kicks target to the close areas (back). However, when back kick takes effect it will hit the opponent right in the open (front).

Normally, this technique is used as a counter attack measure and rarely use for an attack. Let's look on how we can use this technique as an attacking tool. First, you may use the front leg to trick the opponent. Then bring down your front leg to the ground and launch the back kick. Caution when using this technique, since it will drain lots of your energy unless you are really tip top with your stamina.

Another word of caution is accuracy of this attack. If the back kick is direct hit on target, the opponent will drop half dead and will demoralise the opponent fighting spirit. It will make the opponent think twice towards attacking you. So this is the time when you setup the trap as describe in the previous posting under the title "Does having speed and skill enough to win a sparring?"
